Choosing materials and structure for plastic bearing cages

Plastic bearing cages (retainers) separate and guide rolling elements while surviving the lubricant, temperature and assembly method of the bearing. For overseas buyers, R&D and quality engineers, the useful discussion is not a generic claim—it is whether pocket geometry, ring or segment structure, material family and molding plan match the drawing you will approve.

Suzhou Dongying Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. publishes a bearing cage components family focused on pocket geometry, retaining features and mating elements. Individual component pages may list example materials (such as glass-filled PA66, PPS or POM) for documented catalog parts. Those cells are not a universal capability table. Tolerances and acceptance criteria are reviewed against your drawings.

This article stays qualitative. It does not quote company capacity, certifications, lead times, or guaranteed life, torque or speed ratings.

Material families — qualitative logic

Dongying documentation that names materials on cage examples includes glass-filled PA66, PPS and POM. The notes below describe polymer-family behavior to support an RFQ. They are not Dongying laboratory results.

Glass-filled PA66 (PA66-GF)

Often considered when the cage needs higher stiffness and heat resistance than unfilled polyamide, and the environment is compatible with polyamide moisture uptake. Glass fiber raises stiffness but aligns with flow, so shrinkage can be anisotropic. Polyamides continue to absorb moisture after molding, so size and stiffness can change as the part equilibrates. Hot aqueous or glycol fluids raise hydrolysis concerns for some grades—confirm against your lubricant and temperature.

Discuss in tooling: drying; gates that do not crowd thin pocket walls; weld lines away from loaded bridges; whether inspection is dry-as-molded, conditioned, or both.

PPS

Often considered when the drawing needs a stiffer, low-moisture polymer. Dongying’s PPS tubular ball bearing cage design page identifies PPS as the design material in the portfolio, with grade, fit and operating requirements set per project. Glass-filled PPS weld lines deserve attention on thin, loaded pocket bridges during gate layout.

Discuss in tooling: process temperatures suitable for PPS; venting of fine pockets; wear considerations when the grade is glass-filled.

POM (acetal)

Appears as the catalog example material on a slewing segment page. Often considered for low friction and stable dry sliding/rolling behavior when temperature and chemistry fit acetal. Moisture uptake is generally lower than PA66; continuous-temperature and chemical limits still come from the grade datasheet and your drawing.

Discuss in tooling: sink risk where thick hubs meet thin bars; gate marks off pocket working surfaces; packing for ring stability.

PEEK and other high-end polymers

PEEK appears on this site in the AI liquid-cooling evaluation article as a polymer named in an external wetted-materials guideline—not as a bearing-cage catalog material.

PEEK is not a standard quoted cage material at Dongying. Only a customer-specified PEEK grade can be evaluated against your drawing and requirements.

Unfilled PA, PBT or lubricated compounds may appear on drawings. The hub wording is to specify the required material and inspection criteria for the project—there is no published default grade.

Structure and molding checklist

Cage projects on this site typically review:

  1. Pocket geometry and retaining features (including undercuts that need slides or lifters).
  2. Continuous ring versus segment form and how the cage is loaded into the bearing.
  3. Mating rolling-element size/spacing and guidance features.
  4. Wall transitions from thick hubs to thin bridges (warpage, sink, weak weld lines).
  5. Gate and ejector placement relative to pocket working surfaces.
  6. Assembly method and force limits you specify.

Link manufacturing scope through precision molds and injection / insert molding. If metal inserts exist, use insert molding inputs; metal processing stays a separately confirmed responsibility.

What to send with a quote request

Aligned with the bearing cage hub and contact pages:

  • Drawing revision and 3D model, plus assembly interfaces.
  • Rolling-element geometry and fit requirements.
  • Material grade (or constraints to evaluate) and environment notes (lubricant, temperature).
  • Critical dimensions and inspection criteria as your specification.
  • Validation scope and ownership boundaries.
  • Sample quantity, expected volume, and tooling vs part-supply preference (tooling & supply scope).
  • How revision, samples and records stay connected (inspection & approval).

Numeric tolerance classes or life curves are not invented here. If they exist on your drawing, they remain your acceptance standard for the review.

FAQ

Which plastic materials does Dongying show for bearing cages?

Published component examples name materials such as glass-filled PA66, PPS and POM for specific documented parts. The hub asks you to specify the required material for your design; grades and acceptance follow your drawing.

Can you mold a PPS tubular multi-row cage?

Dongying publishes a PPS tubular ball bearing cage design page stating PPS as the design material in the portfolio, with grade, fit and operating requirements specified per project. Send your revision-controlled model for a tooling and molding review.

Do you supply needle roller and slewing cages?

Yes as documented product-family entries: see needle roller and slewing / separator links from the bearing cage components hub. Each project still needs its own drawing, material and validation scope.

Will Dongying guarantee cage life or limiting speed?

No performance guarantees are offered on this page. Operating conditions and validation scope are inputs you define; inspection methods are agreed for the project (quality).

What if our drawing specifies PEEK?

PEEK is not a standard quoted cage material. Only a customer-specified PEEK grade can be evaluated against your drawing and requirements.

How should we start the RFQ?

Use Prepare a project brief with drawing revision, quantities and key requirements, or email suzhoudongying@gmail.com. Prefer the checklist on the hub: geometry, mating elements, material/acceptance, operating/validation.
